WELCOME!

Hi, we are Rick & Debbie, founders of TimminsGetClean.com

Was May 2007 when Debbie and I were walking the Terry Fox Walkway after most the snow had gone and we were disgusted with all the litter on and off the walkway. We complained to each other about the mess and like many other residents did nothing about it.  Saturday of the following week we went back and the litter was more visible after all the snow had melted.  We made a decision to come back the next day but this time armed with grocery bags.  So, on that Sunday we brought at least five grocery bags each and started picking up litter.  As we were doing this, other walkers stopped us and asked "what are you doing". We replied " we're picking up other peoples litter".  Many said "Oh! that's a good idea, maybe we'll do that next time". Hmmmm, maybe we planted a seed for others to do the same.  We continued walking picking up litter, then we were stopped by an elderly couple asking what we were doing.  They thought it was a wonderful idea and asked if they could help. We said "sure" and gave them a couple grocery bags and the four of us walked and picked litter, it was a great feeling getting that area cleaned up together. It was at that time we realized that some people do care enough to help.  Sooooo, being an experienced webmaster I decided to design a website. I bought a domain for hosting the site after I came up with the name TimminsGetClean. I thought the name was appropriate because Timmins needed to get clean. I asked a friend of ours to check out the site and he said "what a great idea" you should go to the media with your idea".  Once Debbie and I agreed it was worth a try to see if others would come out to organized cleanups I called the Timmins daily Press.

TImminsGetClean Makes The News

In May of 2007 The Timmins Daily Press first got news of the web site and our plan of action. When the news was published, response was tremendous and the support was overwhelming.  Our plan was not only to raise awareness about the litter issue but also organize litter cleanups and ask residents to volunteer a couple hours of their time to help cleanup the city.

June 27, 2007 was our first cleanup,  92 volunteers filled 1,868 bags with litter.

To date volunteers have filled 15,964** grocery bags with litter at our regular cleanups. 23,307 lbs or (11,635 tons)

In addition

3.7 metric tons at the May 31, 2008 and 4.6 metric tons at the May 30, 2009 litter cleanups/fundraisers in conjunction with the Timmins and District Hospital Foundation "Cleaning Our Community For A Healthier Tomorrow"
